Background
The Vicariate Apostolic of Brownsville, established in 1874 with Bishops Dominic Manucy (1874-1884) and Peter Verdaguer (1890-1911) as its Vicars Apostolic, became the Diocese of Corpus Christi in 1912. Paul J. Nussbaum, C.P., served as its first bishop (1912-1921) and Emmanuel B. Ledvina as its second (1921-1949).
