Content Description
The collection consists of correspondence and a magazine article documenting a 1976-1977 controversy involving a student, Peter Korth and William F. Buckley Jr. The materials detail the aftermath of Korth's article, "The Factor that Max Forgot," published in the November 5, 1976 issue of the Scholastic, which contained libelous statements regarding Buckley's personal life.
Included are letters from Buckley to Father Theodore Hesburgh expressing his grievance; letters of apology from Korth to Buckley and Hesburgh; administrative correspondence from Dean of Students James Roemer and Scholastic editor John Phelan; and two issues of the Scholastic. The records track the resolution of the incident, including Buckley's acceptance of the apology and discussions regarding the magazine's circulation and research into libel laws.

Biographical / Historical
Peter Korth was a senior student at the University of Notre Dame in 1976. During his tenure as a student writer for the Scholastic, Notre Dame's student magazine, he authored an article that erroneously identified conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr. as homosexual. This led to a brief but significant exchange involving Buckley, University President Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, and University administration regarding libel and journalistic responsibility.
