Scope and Contents

The Julia Merkel Papers consists of materials—realia, ephemera, and photographs—gathered by Julia M. Merkel over the course of her time as a student and student-athlete at the University of Notre Dame (1985-1988), as well as Merkel's later notes about materials in the collection. The collection spotlights Merkel's experience as a founding member of the Notre Dame Women’s Cross-Country team and her life as a student at the University. It additionally includes realia and ephemera from a number of cross country meets Merkel competed in during her time on the team. Materials include a photo album, Notre Dame Cross-Country Racing jerseys, a fundraiser t-shirt, and awards in the forms of ribbons, medals/medallions, plaques, and a trophy. Biographical / Historical

Julia M. Merkel is a University of Notre Dame alum, attending the university from 1985 to 1988. She was a cross-country runner during her time at Notre Dame, and was a key force in the founding of the women’s cross-country team.
