Scope and Contents

Collection contains materials documenting Mary Katherine Tillman’s scholarly and professional activities, including copies of journal articles, book reviews, and other publications; unpublished essays, lectures, and manuscripts; teaching materials; scattered correspondence; and recordings and supplementary materials for Tillman’s "Newman and the Thoughtful Believer" lectures for the Notre Dame Great Teachers Series. The collection also includes a list of important life events, a diary kept from 1982-1983, copies of college term papers, and materials from Tillman’s 50th high school class reunion.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Katherine Tillman was born on December 15, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to John Vincent Tillman (1907-1956) and Esther Schwienher Tillman (1911-2007). She attended Xavier High School and graduated with a B.A. from Mundelein College (Chicago, Ill.) before earning graduate degrees in Philosophy from St. Louis University (M.A.) and the New School for Social Research (Ph.D.) in New York City. She joined the faculty of the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1973 where she taught until her retirement in 2006 at the rank of professor. She was a leading scholar on the thought of Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman and, in 2019, won the Gailliot Award for “Lifetime Achievement in Newman Studies” from the National Institute for Newman Studies. During her time at Notre Dame, she was also recognized with the Sheedy Award for excellence in teaching from the College of Arts and Letters (1985) and was Assistant Provost of the University from 1979 to 1982.
