Background
The Diocese of Providence, a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Hartford, Connecticut, was erected in 1872 and originally included Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. In 1904, with the creation of the Diocese of Fall River, the area in Massachusetts was separated from Providence.
Thomas F. Hendricken (1827-1886) served as first Bishop of Providence until his death. Francis P. Keough (1890-1961) served as bishop from 1934 until 1947.
