Biographical / Historical

Ricardo Ramírez was born on September 12, 1936, in Bay City, Texas. He graduated from Bay City High School in 1955 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas (Houston) in 1959. He joined the congregation of St. Basil in 1960 and undertook postgraduate studies at St. Basil’s Seminary (Toronto) and the Seminario Conciliar (Mexico City) before enrolling in and completing a master’s degree at the University of Detroit in 1968.

Following his ordination in 1966, Ramírez served in Ontario (Canada) and Mexico before returning to San Antonio, Texas, where he served as Executive Vice President of the Mexican American Cultural Center from 1976 to 1981. In 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio and, in 1982, he became Bishop of Las Cruces (New Mexico) where he served until his retirement in 2013.

In 2016, he published the book Power from the Margins: The Emergence of the Latino in the Church and in Society, which reflects his lifelong commitment to social justice and ministering to people on the margins of society.
