Background
David W. Bacon, first bishop of Portland in Maine, was born 15 September 1815, son of William Bacon and Elizabeth Redmond Bacon; he was educated at the Sulpician College in Montreal and at Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Ordained in 1838, he worked in the Diocese of Brooklyn until he became Bishop of Portland in 1855. He died 5 November 1874.
