Content Description

Collection chiefly consists of videotapes created by the C.D. Chesley Company documenting Notre Dame football between 1968 and 1980. The gift also includes a tape documenting Notre Dame men’s basketball, and two miscellaneous tapes. The collection also contains tapes that were not produced by the CD Chelsey company like the 1976 Gator bowl between Notre Dame and Penn State [ABC], 1978 Cotton Bowl game between Notre Dame and Texas [CBS], 1980 game between Notre Dame and Michigan [Metrosports], 1980 game between Notre Dame and Michigan State [Metrosports], 1980 game between Notre Dame and Miami [Metrosports], and a few Tel-Ra highlights of Notre Dame games.

Biographical / Historical

Castleman DeTolley Chesley was born in Washington, D.C. on June 13, 1913 and died April 21, 1983 in Linville, North Carolina. Chesley played college football at the Universities of North Carolina and Pennsylvania. As an independent television sports producer he organized a statewide TV network to broadcast the 1957 Final Four games of the University of North Carolina. This enventually led to the creation of the ACC basketball TV network, the first conference-wide basketball telvision network. From the late 1950s through 1981 Chesley, through the C.D. Chesley company, produced ACC football and basketball regional TV broadcasts. From 1964 until end of 1979 the Company created Sunday TV replays of Notre Dame football games. In 1980 Metrosports took over the Sunday replays from the C.D. Chesley Company.
