Background
Blessed Basil Moreau, head of the Auxiliary Priests of Holy Cross and the Brothers of Saint Joseph, sent seven missionaries led by Rev. Edward Sorin to southern Indiana in 1841. In 1842 they moved north to found the University of Notre Dame and to serve the people of the region on both sides of the Michigan / Indiana border. Even in the early years Father Sorin willingly responded to appeals for help from other parts of the United States, with early foundations as far east as Brooklyn, New York, and as far south as New Orleans. In the twentieth century the Indiana Province still extended far beyond the borders of the state. Father Sorin served as the first president of the University of Notre Dame (1844-1865), as the first Provincial Superior (1865-1868), and as the Superior General (1868-1893) of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
