Biographical / Historical

Fr. Richard Warner, C.S.C., served as Counselor to the President from 1988 to 2003 under the administration of Fr. Edward "Monk" Malloy. Fr. Warner graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. Following his graduation, he studied theology at Catholic University in Santiago, Chile and was ordained in 1966 in Lakewood, Ohio. From 1967 to 1973 he taught English and theology at St. George's College in Santiago, where he also served in the administration. In 1973 he became the provincial treasurer and member of the Provincial Council for the Indiana Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He was elected Provincial Superior in 1979 and served the Congregation of Holy Cross in that capacity until being appointed as Counselor to President Malloy in 1988. In 1989, Fr. Warner accepted additional responsibilities as director of Campus Ministry at Notre Dame. As Counselor to the President and Director of Campus Ministry, Fr. Warner's duties related to the Catholic dimension of the University, including its relationship to the Church, the Congregation of Holy Cross, and other Catholic colleges and universities. He was also responsible for supporting and developing the spiritual life of the University's faculty, staff, and students. Fr. Warner left his position as Counselor to the President in 2003 but continues in his role as Director of Campus Ministry and is an emeritus member of the University's Board of Trustees.
