Papers donated by William C. Moran dating from 1962, consisting of three documents and an unpublished diary concerning the Peruvian Project of the Council for the International Lay Apostolate (CILA) with entries by William C. Moran, Thomas J. Schlereth, P. Barry Baldwin, and Thomas Bishop; papers donated by Margaret Kelly Davenport dating from 1962, including a CILA membership card, an identification card from the Gran Mision de la Ciudad de Mexico, a flier for bull fights in Plaza Mexico, and a leaflet describing Centro Nacional de Ayuda a las Misiones entre Indigenas (CENAMI); CILA papers donated by Stephen F. John, 1966-1967, including "The Challenge to Love . . . Confronted, 1966" (reports from the 1966 CILA summer projects), "Love Even As I have Loved You . . ." (reports from the 1967 CILA summer projects), Project Report, East Harlem, New York, June 15 August 31, 1966 (a longer version of the East Harlem report included in the bound set of 1966 reports), an undated CILA fund-raising brochure, "Project Awareness: A Survey of Social Action for the Notre Dame and St. Mary's Student Community," "A Word from CILA . . . . . Biographical / Historical

Students at the University of Notre Dame founded the Council for the International Lay Apostolate during the 1961-1962 academic year "to do something positive to express their concern for other people". The members organized and carried out summer projects to help needy people in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Colorado, Harlem, Harrisburg, and South Bend. During the school year they formed a community to learn about human need in the United States and Latin America, to deepen their understanding of their role as lay apostles, and to relate their lives to their faith. In 1966 CILA merged with the Colombian Project at Saint Mary's College. Source: CILA fund-raising brochure and the Project Awareness pamphlet, both dating from 1967.
