Biographical / Historical

The Institute for Social Concerns was founded as the Center for Social Concerns in 1983 by University of Notre Dame students Mary Meg McCarthy, Judith Anne Beatty, and Stacy Hennessy under the supervision of Rev. Don McNeill, C.S.C. Then-University President Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C. allowed the group to establish an office in the recently-vacated WNDU television studios.

In October 2024, the name of the organization was changed from Center for Social Concerns to the Institute for Social Concerns. According to an official announcement from the institute, "the name change signals its status as a scholarly unit with faculty from various departments, colleges, and schools whose activities contribute to a comprehensive and multifaceted interdisciplinary mission."
