Background

Charles M. Carey, born in Kokomo, Indiana, 7 February 1908, attended Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame during his high-school years, 1922-1926, the University of Notre Dame, 1927-1931, and Holy Cross College in Washington, DC, 1931-1935. He was ordained a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1935, earned a master's degree in English from Notre Dame, 1935-1937, and joined the English Department there in 1937. During his long career at Notre Dame he also taught religion courses and served as Vice President of Student Affairs, Prefect of Religion, Director of Publications, Assistant Director of Admissions, Associate Dean of the First Year of Studies, and associate editor of the Ave Maria. He died 15 August 1998.
