Carbon copy of a typewritten transcription of the Civil War diary of E. W. Herman, 22 July 1861 - 31 July 1864; with accounts of camp life, reactions of soldiers to appointment of General Grant, picket duty, marching along the Mississippi, a battle of 7 November 1861 near Columbus, Kentucky, gun boats, reactions of wives, the brass band throwing away instruments to take up muskets, Fort Smith at Smithland, Kentucky, General Lew Wallace, Fort Henry, bitter cold, General Smith, Commodore Foote, battle near Fort Donaldson, the Pittsburgh Landing Battle (Shiloh), General Halleck, General Sweeney, General Davies, General Pope, visits with other regiments, recruiting, Corinth, drunken officers, skirmishing near Resaca, General Sherman, river crossing in pontoon boats, train guard duty, pontoon bridge, Keehesaw Mountains battle. Also a transcription of a note written by Herman in April of 1866 explaining how he himself expanded the shorthand of the original diary (now lost) and wrote out a plain version; and transcriptions of two related clippings.
