Scope and Content

Letter of 14 April 1942 from Postmaster General Frank C. Walker to Father Charles Coughlin, the publisher of Social Justice , notifying him of a hearing at which he can show why the second-class mail privileges of his publication should not be revoked; and a long letter from Attorney General Francis Biddle to Walker showing how Social Justice routinely conveyed "false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies and whoever, when the United States is at war", attempted to cause insubordination, and obstructed the enlistment and recruiting of the military service, with a cover letter conveying this document to Coughlin.

Background

In Social Justice the radio preacher Fr. Charles Coughlin accused the Roosevelt administration of purposely bringing on the war with Japan, of serving the interests of international bankers, and of conspiring to establish a totalitarian rule in the United States.
