Background

On 26 June 1967, Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., announced that a University Club, to serve members of the University of Notre Dame faculty and professional staff, would be built with money donated by Robert H. Gore, Sr., former Governor of Puerto Rico. The club's principal facilities consisted of a large lounge, which could be converted into smaller meeting rooms, and a dining room or rathskeller accommodating approximately 150 persons. Architectural features of the rathskeller included a large fireplace, a vaulted ceiling and a plank floor. Governor Gore also donated his collection of steins, many of them of great value, gave the room its distinctive decor. In 2004 university officials announced plans to raze the building and replace it with a much larger engineering building. On September 24, 2007, the Observer reported the club's last meal.
