Background
Thomas Stritch began teaching at Notre Dame as a graduate assistant in 1934 and an instructor of English in 1935. He became an assistant professor of English in 1938 and an associate professor in 1941. During World War II he left Notre Dame for the navy. Starting in 1946 he served as head of the Department of Journalism at Notre Dame. He helped form and joined the Department of American Studies in 1970. He died in 2004.
