Purcell's letter of Feb. 19, signed by him and eight other American bishops and addressed to the German bishops has been received by Melchers, and published by him in the Catholic papers. Through this public testimony of Catholic unity to the whole world has given them joy in their tribulation. In the name of the other bishops as well as his own, he thanks Purcell and the other American bishops for this document, praying that through their prayers they may obtain whatever good God destines to come from these difficulties. :: II-5-f L.S.
