Gibbons, James, Bishop of Richmond, Richmond, Virginia, to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell, of Cincinnati, Ohio, 1872 November 30
Scope and Contents
He writes to Purcell, the oldest and most experienced prelate in the United States, to get the benefit of his advice. He is building a large parochial school for boys in Cathedral Parish and does not think he could obtain Christian Brothers for some time. He does not know either, whether the Brothers or the Sisters of Mercy would be the better community to have. Since Purcell has them teaching in his schools, he should be able to inform him whether the Brothers or Sisters are the more satisfactory. He personally thinks the Sisters better, but does not like to trust his unripe judgment in the matter. He hopes to see Purcell live to celebrate his golden wedding in the Eposcopacy in 1883. :: II-5-e A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo.
