Luers, John H. Bishop of Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1870 November 2
Scope and Contents
Bishop Caspar H. Borgess told him that Purcell would be at Notre Dame the ninth. He shall try to be there also on the evening of the same day, it being impossible for him to be there before. He asks if Purcell won't draw up a Pastoral letter protesting against the usurpation of the Papal States by the king of Italy. All of the bishops will sign it with pleasure. It might prevent the recognition of our government of this shameful deed. He has not seen the article in the New Englander reviewing Stone's work. He presumes it is answered in this month's issue of the Catholic World. The non-Catholic world ignores Divine Providence in the government of this world. He tells Purcell that he has full episcopal powers in the diocese. :: II-5-d A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo.
