Lamy, John B., Bishop of Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Archbishop John Baptist Purcell, of Cincinnati, Ohio, 1861 January 27
Scope and Contents
He was glad to hear what Purcell wrote in regard to Father Francis Cubero, O.P.. It would be a great acquisition to New Mexico if Cubero should come as he speaks the two necessary languages. Cubero could very easily establish a house of his order in New Mexico. He would be useful to give retreats to the clergy. For nine years they never had any but a few days. Father Joseph P. Machebeuf is at Pike's Peak since October on Christmas Day he said Mass in his fine new brick church in Denver. The Indians are worse than ever. Lamy's schools are prospering. ` P.S. He hopes the matter of the 8,000 francs is settled as he left his allocation of 1860 from the Propagation of the Faith for this debt. :: II-5-a A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
