Barry, Father William J., Cambridgeport, Massachusetts to James F. Edwards, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1901 December 03

 Item — Box: CEDW 10, Folder: 17
Identifier: CEDW XI-2-d

Scope and Contents

With this letter Father Thomas J. Scully transmits to Edwards a relic of the Ursuline Convent at Charlestown, Massachusetts, burnt during the Know-nothing days. Scully bought land from E.R. Luke, a hay and grain merchant who at the time of the destruction of the convent was employed in a store at East Cambridge where he heard frequent mutterings about the burning of the convent and on the day itself open jokes about going to the fire. The cross was found in the ruins and was given to Scully by Luke's son many years later. :: XI-2-d A.L.S. 3pp.
