He supposes Edwards is expecting a letter from him but he is up at the lake and there are lots of small jobs for him to do around their new house. His father thanks Edwards for the kind treatment he received at Notre Dame. When he looks at the picture of Edwards' room, he wonders if the professor is thinking of his private secretary.
