Audran, Father Ernest, Jeffersonville, Indiana to James F. Edwards, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1894 August 10
Scope and Contents
Judge Joseph Belan writes that the portrait of Bishop Celestine de la Hailandiere fell into the hands of Mr. De La Bigne Villeneuve who married a cousin of the bishop. Audran will write him at once. The family of Hailandieres is now extinct. The original name was Guynemers. The addition of de la Hailandiere comes from an estate which passed from the family three generations ago. The father of Celestin and his brother Joseph was the owner of a few vessels. Audran's father who had been in the Royal Navy commanded one of these vessels for a season. His father was second cousin by the Perras family. Audran's family was well known in France, especially Gerard who obtained distinction in engraving Adam ?. Audran was Henry IV's officer of the wolf hunt. His father took part in the naval battle off the isle Oussant. Audran's funeral address at St. John's will complete what he had to say about Hailandiere. :: XI-1-l A.L.S. 2pp.
