Dutton, Ira B. Joseph, Molokai, Sandwich Islands, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1890 June 26
Scope and Contents
Hudson will get a letter from Elizabeth Harper. He had been doing work for Bishop Hermann Koeckemann relating to the renewal of the Hyde and Company charges. Three sisters are at work at Kalawao. Koeckemann thought it well to have on record what Dutton prepared on Father Joseph Damien De Veuster. Perhaps Hudson has not seen the letters by the correspondent, who came with Amy C. Fowler, which Dutton forwards. Miss Sweet did not heed the Mother's request and made errors in her writing. She spoke of Dutton's not offering his hand, but did not say he had not washed his hands after dressing sores. They talked of mutual friends in Chicago; Dutton mentioned Sheriff Matson with whom he served as sergeant in the War. If the truth had not been overstepped, the scandal mongers probably would have kept quiet. :: X-3-k A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo.
