Dutton, Brother Joseph Ira B., Molokai, Sandwich Islands, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1890 June 17
Scope and Contents
There is nothing further from Father O'Callaghan of Tasmania. He did receive a letter from Father M. J. Beechinor dated Richmond, Tasmania, who considers it his duty to say that he considers Mr. Ramsay unfit for service. Ramsay is overzealous in his work for temperance. From mention that he seeks help from Patrick Cardinal Moran to come to Molokai, Dutton infers that he will apply to the Board of Health at Honolulu. Dutton has sent Beechinor's letter to Bishop Hermann Koeckemann suggesting that he acquaint the Board of Health with this information. Doctor Prince Albert Morrow wishes to see Dutton's information about Father Joseph Damien DeVeuster, which he will also furnish Hudson. Dutton gives Hudson permission to let William P. Lyons read it. If Hudson and Charles Warren Stoddard wish to use the information in their writing, they may. Dutton does not object to Doctor Berteling's reading the statement. Elizabeth Harper will probably give Hudson the substance of this information. It was Dutton's fault that Hudson got the papers from Mr. Justi. Justi is not a Catholic; he gives some data on leprosy in Norway, which put the Hawaiian Board of Health into correspondence with Doctor Gerhard A. Hansen of Norway. The sisters have been present for three weeks. Hudson will get a copy of the last report of the Board of Health. He sends a clipping from the Honolulu Gazette. No enclosure. :: X-3-k A.L.S. 7pp. 8vo. 14
