Harper, Elizabeth, Brooklyn, New York, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1890 June 15

 Item — Box: CHUD 14
Identifier: CHUD X-3-k

Scope and Contents

Harper received a letter from Ira B. Dutton asking her to describe to Hudson the visit of Bishop Hermann Koeckemann of Honolulu to Molokai. Koeckemann was there from May 6 to 9. Father Wendelin Moellers left with him to regain his health. Father Mathias was left to take his place. Koeckemann is advanced in age. Doctor Godwyn Swift took photographs and got what he has been long asking for. At the suggestion of Mother Marianne, O.S.F., Dutton sent a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Open Letter" with which the Bishop Koeckemann was pleased. Harper warned Dutton against Amy C. Fowler's camera, because when Dr. Kimball, the President of the Board of Health, made a recent visit to the Island, he had a party with him, one of which was Fowler and a Miss Sweet, non de plume, Annie Laurie, who is connected with a San Francisco newspaper. Dutton has permission to allow the information in his statements to go to Hudson, Doctor Prince Albert Morrow and the Picpus Fathers at Louvain. Dutton says the statement will make good a promise to send some sketches of Father Joseph Damien De Veuster to Hudson. A clipping from the Sun is enclosed: Gorham D. Gilman of Boston writes to the Sun regarding Stevenson, Reverend Dr. Hyde and Rev. Mr. Gage. :: X-3-k A.L.S. 9pp. 12mo. 16
