Barry, P T., Chicago, Illinois, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 December 10
Scope and Contents
The Ave Maria has been for years a favorite with Barry because of its literary excellence as a Catholic religious publication. Before the November 24th issue, he had never known it to discuss prominent political personages or their public acts. The Ave Maria's eulogy of President Grover Cleveland, which appeared in that issue invites criticism of those who do not agree with Hudson's estimate of Cleveland. Barry proceeds to criticize a number of Cleveland's presidential acts and policies. Since Democratic newspapers are approvingly quoting the Ave Maria's eulogy of Cleveland as a Catholic endorsement of the man and his administration, it is due Ave Maria readers, to know why many Catholics voted against Cleveland, contributing to his defeat. :: X-3-i A.L.S. 14pp. 12mo.
