Edes, Ella B., Rome, Italy, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 November 14

Scope and Contents

Edes inquires if she should buy copies of "Genazzano Madonnas". Edes has been recommended to write for the Freeman's Journal by Monsignor Dennis O'Connell, rector of the North American College. He thought it was a shame that there was no reliable direct correspondence with America, since most of the Catholic newspapers crib from the London Tablet, which is without credit. She sees the Baltimore Mirror does the same. Edes supposes Eduardo Soderini has been dropped; he is now the Rome correspondent of the Liverpool Catholic Times. She has given up the London Tablet, only writing the regular weekly letter pending the arrival of the sub-editor, who comes for the winter because Bishop Herbert Vaughan of Salford wishes him to learn the Italian language and politics. They vexed Edes with their meddling, so she asked Vaughan to find another correspondent. The present editor, Mr. Cox, is a conceited little prig, who understands neither Italian or French. The Freeman's Journal is making a fearful blunder regarding Monsignor O'Connell and Richmond. The report is untrue and until now the matter has not come up before the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda. Father Edward Mullen, O.S.A., died weeks ago. Father John Lang, who left Rome November 19th with Bishop JosephDwenger, carried the relics of St. Robert with him and will deliver them to Notre Dame. She inquires if Hudson received the copy of the Osservatore containing the article on the jubilee of Father-General Edward Sorin, C.S.C., which she wrote for that newspaper and signed "A Spinster". Edes has given a letter of introduction to Hudson to Eva Mariotti, who is anxious to do a little writing. Hudson is to tell Professor Edwards that Monsignor James Collins will give a photo for the collection. Edes warns Hudson not to spread himself on the brochure by Bishop John Joseph Keane entitled "The Providential Mission of Leo XIII". It is not approved in Rome. The master of the Sacred Palace refused the Nihil Obstat and the printing of a French translation at the Propaganda Press was stopped. :: X-3-h A.L.S. 14pp. 16mo. 12
