DeVeuster,SS.CC., Father Damien Joseph, Kalamao, Molokai, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 August 8

 Item — Box: CHUD 12
Identifier: CHUD X-3-h

Scope and Contents

Hudson's kind letter of July 9 is at hand with the letter of a very charitably intentioned person who informs them of the means her father used to cure leprosy. For this incurable disease Damien believes in the possibility of a miracle such as reported in Holy Scripture, but not in a natural remedy to cure leprosy. The green coverlet of their graveyard will put a stop to the progress of his disease and then all will be right. He continues to be happy and resigned to the Holy will of God. With the desire to have the Kalamao church in proportion with the beautiful tabernacle, Damien is daily at work with the mason and carpenters building a quasi new church; the cost of which will run up above a thousand, but they expect the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph to provide the means to settle the bills. The building is 70x30x18 feet. It is to be covered with corrugated iron. The belfry is above the porch or entrance. Forty feet of the building is stone, the rest is wood. A good old Irishman, a leper, is the mason and he with two of the boys do the wood work. :: X-3-h A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo.
