Scope and Contents

Maurice Francis Egan and Edwards dined today with Monsignor Robert Seton. Seton invited Edwards to stay at his house and extended to Hudson an invitation to visit and stay with him. Egan and Seton will be at Notre Dame, August 15. Yesterday Edwards was entertained at the Catholic Protectory. Father W. Daly of the Cathedral and Father Evans and Edwards visited there in the afternoon and remained until 9 P.M. Brother Leontine took them through all the departments where trades are taught and Edwards examined the system of training. He was more than convinced of the importance of giving attention to the individual. There are 1300 inmates from the gutters and byways of New York, yet Edwards saw only busy hands, smiling faces and perfect order. Leontine said it was possible to do almost anything in training the boys, and he has the confidence and esteem of clergy and laity. Father Walters, McGovern and O'Dwyer were invited by Leontine to dine with them. Leontine told the party that Dr. Clarke assured him the third volume of the Deceased Bishops would not have been written but for encouragement received from Notre Dame. Monday, Edwards dined with Father Michael Lavelle, who is spreading the fame of Notre Dame, and the priests of the Cathedral. Father Anthony Lammel, the great musican of the Cathedral, will be at Notre Dame. He has volunteered to go to Hartford with Edwards. Father Thomas McMillin McMillan, C.S.P., was present, so was Father Valois, an old priest from Montreal, and six other clergymen attached to the Cathedral. Archbishop Michael Augustine Corrigan came into the city today for a few hours. Edwards told him he desired Luigi Gregori to paint his portrait. Father Lammel and Evans and Edwards are going tomorrow to dine with Mr. and Mrs. Egan. Mr. Monroe will be present. Egan wants Edwards to visit the Century people. Ed- wards had a letter from Kehoe today who says he has secured great treasures in the book line. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 6pp. 8vo. 18
