Scope and Contents

Dutton sends an enclosed clipping from an old New York Tablet. Hudson's beautiful gift brought considerable alteration and enlargement of the Church. It needed improvement because of age and the increase of population to 825. The main portion of the enlarged church is built of rock. When alterations are completed, the new altar and Hudson's safe and exposition will appear to good advantage. Father Joseph Damien is busy with the church and a new dormitory for boys. How everything is to be financed is a problem, but the government is helping with the dormitory. A description of the work on the church is given. Damien is too busy to write now. He is well, but the disease advances and causes more disfigurement. Father Lambert L. Conrardy is in good spirits and busy learning the language. A generous citizen of Honolulu gave $5000 for a new water works. Mr. Meyer, the agent of the board of health, is having constructed at Kalaupapa a series of houses for the women and children. It will be taken care of by the Franciscan sisters now at Kakaako. The branch hospital near Honolulu will be broken up and all sent here. Dutton sends regards to Charles Warren Stoddard. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 7pp. 12mo.
