Dorsey, Anna Hanson, Washington, District of Columbia, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 May 2

 Item — Box: CHUD 12
Identifier: CHUD X-3-g

Scope and Contents

Dorsey acknowledges receipt of the advertisement of her book and says she is disappointed that the press notices were left out. They would not only advance her pecuniary interests, but would repair the mistakes and injustice which have hampered her literary carrer. Lady Georgiana Fullerton might have written her patronizing lines to encourage a beginner, but they were not intended as a notice of Dorsey's books. They were taken from a private letter to her by Nellie, Ella Lorraine Dorsey, who while acting with good intentions, did not realize that such faint commendation by Fullerton would be a wet blanket. Eliza Allen Starr's cordial words, while favorable to the Uniform Edition would not be as effective as a press notice. The letters of Pope Leo XIII and Cardinal Giggons should head the list. She has worked continuously for forty years in the interest of Catholic literature, writing tales which were in their conception and spirit, the first Catholic American tales of fiction published in the United States. She has always written for Catholics, yet a year ago the Catholic World, in an article entitled" "Catholic Writers of America" remarked that the only first rank female writers of Catholic fiction were Anna Theresa Sadlier and Christian Reid. She is not railing against Reid; Dorsey simply wants the recognition she has earned. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 8pp. 12mo.
