Dutton, Ira, Brother Joseph, Kalawao, Molokai, Hawaii, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, c.s.c., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 March 16
Scope and Contents
The cases containing the tabernacles, etc., are at Honolulu waiting for smooth sea. Father Joseph Damien De Veuster, c.ss.cc sends his aloha. Damien is strong yet though the disease progresses outwardly with some rapidity and has not yet attacked any of the organs. He wishes to be kindly remembered to Charles Warren Stoddard. It is fortunate that the balance of the order to Mr. Childs could not be forwarded. Dutton has to set aside attempts of that sort now, since taking up sore dressing the work has increased. Father Albert is in Mauritius, no doubt, so far as known here. The superintendent of the Honolulu water works is there with a gang of men putting down new pipes for their water supply. Minister of Interior Thurston and Agent Meyers have been looking after other improvements. 23 lepers came yesterday. Dutton wishes Hudson could learn of some other vocation to help. The board hired a man. He came, looked at the work and went back asking to be released. He was from the vicinity of Boston many years ago. :: X-3-g A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
