Carrier, Father Joseph, C.S.C., Montreal, Canada, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1888 January 18
Scope and Contents
Carrier read an account of the last illness of Fr. Neyron, and has been edified at his holy death. His has been a rather mysterious life, in some respects. Hudson knows, all at Notre Dame know, as well as Carrier, that he delighted in mystifying people-what one won't say in telling white lies. Bearing this in mind, Carrier has been pained to see in the last number of the "Scholastic" the ridiculously false stories told of him by his over-credulous biographer. Carrier had in his hands a year or so ago, not one, but two certificates of Baptism, or ordination, etc. of Fr. Neyron; and in these certificates, legally certified, the date of his birth was given as 1803. So, the story of his having been a surgeon in Napoleon's army at Waterloo, his being taken a prisoner, etc., is, of course, simply absurd, being only 12 years of age in 1815. Nor did he learn surgery or medicine in France, at all. Thinking that these foolish falsehoods might be copied by newspapers at large, and their fallacy ultimately divulged, Carrier had intended to write to Fr. John O'Connell to contradict them in a very few words, simply stating that Fr. Neyron's biographer had unwittingly fallen into many errors, etc. But even that might not be prudent; and might, besides, be distasteful to the N.D. authorities. So, Carrier leaves it to Hudson and Fr. John, after consulting Rev. Fr. Thomas Walsh, to do what will be deemed proper in this case. While Carrier speaks of impositions and lies, he mentions to Hudson the fact that the late Fr. Hallinan never received the title of D.D., except from Mr. Joseph Lyons, and the Scholastic. Very many misstatements have been, to his positive knowledge, perpetrated, wittingly or unwittingly, he knows not, in the Scholastic, and sometimes even in the extremely guarded, cautious and generally well-informed Ave Maria. :: X-3-f A.L.S. 2pp. 4to.
