DeVeuster, SS.CC., Father Joseph Damien, Kalawao, Molokai, Hawaiian Islands, to Father Marcellus Bousquet, Paris, France, 1886 August 25

 Item — Box: CHUD 9
Identifier: CHUD X-3-c

Scope and Contents

By a letter of Bishop Hermann Koeckemann, Vicar Aposotolic of the Sandwich Islands published by the Missions Catholique, the public has been informed of the situation in which DeVeuster finds himself. Ten years ago, he wrote Bousquet that he believed the germ of leprosy was in his system because of his long stay with the lepers. DeVeuster is decorated not only with the royal cross of King Kalakana, but also the heavy cross of leprosy. His constitution is being gradually undermined but he continues his active life and since the departure of Father Albert, DeVeuster administers to the needs of two leper villages. Last year the Hawaiian Board of Health, under the direction of the Japanese, Doctor Goto, introduced the Japanese treatment for leprosy in the branch hospital at Kakaako, near Honolulu, which is managed by a band of Franciscan Sisters . Last month DeVeuster visited the hospital to see the results of the treatment, as well as to study the process. Doctor Goto told DeVeuster that a large number of cases have been cured in Japan by the treatment. As for DeVeuster, it is a consolation to know that relief has been given in a considerable number of advanced cases. King Kalakana visited him at the Sisters' hospital and promised to introduce the treatment in the grand lazaretto. As a result of taking the treatment DeVeuster has recovered strength. :: X-3-c A.L.S. 9pp. 12mo.
