Dorsey, Anna Hanson, Washington, District of Columbia, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885 October 5
Scope and Contents
When Dorsey wrote that her stories were short she meant they were not serials, for she does not consider a story long even though it extends through three or four months. She finds that leading Catholic magazines in England and the United States continue to publish serials which keep the readers interest in both the story and magazine. Short stories are forgotten as soon as read and Dorsey feels she has no talents for writing them. Her object in writing a story is to illustrate what Catholic or Christian life should be and is not. She comments on the misunderstanding about her story "Palms". Is it too late to withdraw her story "Mad Penitent" from the press? She approves Hudson's plan, but is unwilling that publishing of her works in book form not begin until the subscriptions justify paying for the whole. How would it do to get Bishop John J. Keane of Richmond to write something for a circular on the series of books that would circulate among the American Hierarchy. Archbishop James Gibbons, she is sure would commend it. Dorsey thought the person who wrote the sketch about Admiral Kelty made a mistake in ascribing to Sister Josephine what was really due to Mother A. :: X-3-a A.L.S. 6pp. 8vo.
