Ryder, Eliot P., Saint Louis, Missouri, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885 July 8
Scope and Contents
Ten days ago Ryder sent Hudson a sketch on Father Adrian Rouquette and since Ryder is in dire need, he had hoped to hear from Hudson sooner. Ryder believes he can live but one year. For light work which he does for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Ryder received but $5 a week which is not enough to live on. When he learned that wealthy Lady Georgiana Fullerton accepted payment for articles written for the Ave Maria, he would feel no shame in accepting payment for his contributions. He is not bitter. Since his mother's death, together with the fact that at twenty-nine his life will cease, because of illness, before he can do great things for God, makes his judgement harsh. Mrs. Ryder is in Saratoga so he has independence and peace. :: X-3-a A.L.S. 3pp. 4to.
