Moffitt, Thomas V., Nauvoo, Illinois, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883 May 17
Scope and Contents
Moffitt protests against the publishing of the story "Elaine", which appeared in the Ave Maria, in book form. At the same time the story appeared in the Ave Maria during the summer of 1882, two friends of his, cousins to one another developed a great attachment for one another and wished to marry. Relatives of both protested and attempted to break the association, claiming the marriage would bring only misery. While the Church grants dispensations for such marriages, it does so only reluctantly. The young man in this case wrote to his non-religious brother for advice, and the brother stated he could get the dispensation if he paid the proper Church authority a high fee. About this time the young couple had been persuaded not to marry. The young man was reading the story Elaine and when in its conclusion the author confirmed the infamous calumny that if one has the money, the question of a dispensation is no trouble; it astonished Moffitt and he wonders if it may yet determine his two friends to marry. :: X-2-k A.L.S. 8pp. 12mo.
