Chrysostom John, C.S.C., Brother, San Francisco, California, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883 March 2
Scope and Contents
Brother John has written to Father General an account of his interview with Archbishop John Sadoc Alemany who refused to give a letter of introduction to his priests; the diocese must support their own paper, the Monitor . Brother has no friend there among the clergy unless Father Hugh P.J. Gallagher . He has to "go it alone" which may account for his poor success in California. He called on Marquis D.J. Oliver who said he gave Brother Francis $10 for a life subscription to the Ave Maria but never received a copy. A note in Hudson's writing gives instructions to start up the Ave Maria to Mr. Oliver. Another note, in another hand, states that Mr. Oliver subscribed for 2 years, October '75 to October '77 and that Brother Francis said there was no life agreement and no $10.00. :: X-2-k A.L.S. 2pp. 4to.
