Brother has no friend there among the clergy unless Father Hugh P.J. Gallagher . He has to "go it alone" which may account for his poor success in California. He called on Marquis D.J. Oliver who said he gave Brother Francis $10 for a life subscription to the Ave Maria but never received a copy. A note in Hudson's writing gives instructions to start up the Ave Maria to Mr. Oliver.
