Edes, Ella B., Rome, Italy, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1883?

 Item — Box: CHUD 5
Identifier: CHUD X-3-m

Scope and Contents

Edes has gotten a caligraph. They had great fun over the translation of Lapidary Latin in the Freeman of February 16. There is not much satisfaction in writing for a paper where the people are so stupidly ignorant. They are no better in home matters: Edes saw a notice "of the return to his diocese of Bishop Nicholas Aloysius Gallagher, of New Orleans." Monsignor Louis Jacobini asked Edes if the American press had lost all common sense. The canard relative to the $1,500,000 given to the new University is so ridiculous that one wonders that a journal like the Cleveland Universe could be beguiled into printing it. A Judge O'Connor, Edes thinks, promised $50,000 at a future date. She is told Charles Warren Stoddard is to teach literature in the new University. Did Hudson notice the article in the Catholic World by Father Augustine F. Hewit ? A judge of the Holy Office said it was heretical. It is strange how odd those Paulists are in many of their views. Edes hears that the last book of Father Isaac T. Hecker, "The Church and The Age", would not pass muster if submitted to the Index. Monsignor Peter Dufal, C.S.C. says there is a chance of Father General's coming to Rome. The caligraph is a present of Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid :: X-3-m T.L.S. cut 2pp. 4to. 10
