Gordon has been traveling about Illinois visiting friends and so has neglected her correspondence. She has returned to her home town of Cairo and describes it for Hudson. With the flood on the Mississippi and the Ohio Rivers at Cairo, Gordon's father sent her to stay with her grandmother at Villa Ridge, a rural villages which she describes in details.
