Emery, Susan L., Dorchester, Massachusetts, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1879 June 28
Scope and Contents
Miss Emery is disappointed as she has received nothing for her "Into Port". She wonders if Hudson's letter could have been lost. She does not like to take anything from the Ave Maria with all the trouble at Notre Dame, but for the last two years she has earned so very little. When the "Catholic Record" was in existence Mr. Hardy and Mr. Mahoney used to pay her at a fixed rate per article and not per page and she wonders if Hudson would be willing to do the same. She is writing this letter in spite of what Hudson said of the difficulties in the acceptance and publication of the articles as she does not want Hudson to think of her interests before those of the magazine. She wants Hudson to speak frankly and she wants to feel definitely at work as composition is a talent with her. She does not know how long she will be able to work in this way. She is engaged in a drama for a girl's school and wants to know if Hudson has a knowledge of the value of them. She thanks Hudson for the pamphlets on Confraternity but it is not what she wanted. What has become of Cyril, did Angela die? The letters from Arthur in Rome on the fiesta in honor of St. Philip Neri were charming. Miss McCarthy gave her a $1.75 in payment for six months of the magazine. A friend of hers who works in the post office told her that only 3 copies of the magazine used to come through and how many come. She is an agent. She thinks Hudson has "Love's Work", "St. Ignatius", "Three Crosses", and "Subject in Hope". She fancies that he wants a number of small stories about the length of "Through an Alpine Pass". She wants to write some and has some ideas if that is what Hudson wants. She wants to know if she should send several subscriptions by postal order, or what does Hudson prefer? :: X-2-e A.L.S. 6 pp. 8vo.
