Howe, Rose, B.F., Valparaiso, Indiana, to Father Daniel E. Hudson, C.S.C., Notre Dame, Indiana, 1877 August 14

Scope and Contents

She is glad that Hudson was happy to receive the scapular. In her opinion Hudson's admiration for her mother is entirely deserved. Her sister is also becoming disgusted with Brother Stanislaus because of his suppression of all references to the Old Testament despite the fact that it is definitely permissible to use them, and certainly in the English language. Because of Hudson's affiliation with the Holy Cross Fathers and his position as editor of a Catholic periodical she believes that he could use his influence to obtain a book concerning the life of Louise Lateau for her sister which would aid her in writing a story for the Ave Maria. She received a letter from Father Aegidious Hennemann in which he stated that because of Hudson's gentlemanlyness and religious spirit he is confident that Hudson was not responsible for the discontinuance of "Aunt Winifred" in the Ave Maria. Her next installment of the "Festival of the Rosary" will be sent soon. She hopes that her unhappy experiences with the Ave Maria may serve as a lesson to Hudson's subordinates in the future. She and her mother plan to be at Notre Dame again next summer. :: X-2-d A.L.S. 6pp. 12mo.
