Gibbons, Archbishop James, Cape May, New Jersey, to Richard Henry Clarke, New York, New York, 1883 July 18
Scope and Contents
Clarke's letter has been forwarded to Cape May where he is spending some time for his health. Gibbons can give Clarke very little direct assistance. Father Doane, Monsignor Seton and Archbishop Michael A. Corrigan can furnish valuable information with regard to Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley . Bayley was absent during a great part of his five years administration due to his health. Yet he left the impress of his methodical mind on the diocese, especially by the Synod with its wise rules of discipline. He also consecrated the Cathedral in Centennial year of 1876. Philadelphia then became a metropolitan see owing to his administrations. For more detailed information Gibbons refers Clarke to Father Bernard J. McManus, pastor of St. John's Church, Baltimore, who could give many points on Bayley and Father Placide L. Chapelle. Gibbons could tell some interesting anecdotes about Bayley if he could talk with Clarke. Regarding Bishop John McGill, Bishop Francis A. Janssens and Bishop Thomas A. Becker might be consulted with profit. A visit and interview in Richmond might be desirable. :: I-2-n A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
