Scope and Contents
The accompanying circular of Dr. John Gilmary Shea refers to a movement commenced in this city immediately after the close of the late Plenary Council, to enable him to publish a history of the Catholic Church of the United States. Among the originators and supporters are Cardinal John McCloskey, Archbishops James Gibbons, John J. Williams, Patrick J. Ryan, and Michael A. Corrigan, several of the Bishops, indeed all to whom the matter has been submitted, and many of the Rectors and lay gentlemen of this city. A committee appointed to carry this out consists of Corrigan, Monsignors William Quinn, Thomas S. Preston, Fathers McSweeny and Burtsell . Father John M. Farley is Secretary, Father Arthur J.
