Coudert has Brownson's note of the 20th requesting him to write a paper to be read at the Catholic Congress in Baltimore next November on "the position of the Holy Father, the necessity of his independence in the exercise of his rights and duties." He regrets his inability to comply with this request, as he is about to leave for Europe with the expectation of being absent until the latter part of September, and will therefore be unable to devote the necessary time and thought to the preparation of such a paper.
