Letter from Lucy E. Abbot to Margaret Blackbird Boyd, 1885 May 16
Scope and Contents
Letter from Lucy E. Abbot of the Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C. to Margaret Blackbird Boyd of Harbor Springs, Michigan, dated May 16, 1885. Abbot confirms that she recently received a letter from Boyd regarding the stealing of Odawa land at the hands of white settlers in Harbor Springs, and that she gave the letter to Father Stephan, who is in charge of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions in Washington D.C. Abbot relays that Father Stephan said he would take the letter to the Secretary of the Interior and see if he could help Boyd’s people. Abbot says that she spoke to Mr. Lusk about the “Indian things” [likely artwork created by Boyd, an accomplished basket maker, beadworker, and quillworker], and that he says he has sold some of them, and has just sent some money to Boyd. Abbot says she also went to Mr. Chapman’s Bookstore to ask about Boyd’s things that are being sold there, and she asked him to send any profits on hand to Boyd. Abbot encourages Boyd to continue praying for help for herself and her people.
