Letter from Lucy E. Abbot to Margaret Blackbird Boyd, 1882 November 9

 Item — Box: CLOB 1, Folder: 08
Identifier: CLOB 1/08

Scope and Contents

Letter from Lucy E. Abbot of the Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C. to Margaret Blackbird Boyd of Harbor Springs, Michigan, dated November 9, 1882. Abbot advises Boyd to write a clear statement of facts about the stealing of land from Odawa Indians at the hands of white settlers in Harbor Springs and send it to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C., as well as to General Charles Ewing, Catholic Commissioner in Washington, D.C. Abbot also makes reference to a “box of things” [likely artwork created by Boyd, an accomplished basket maker, beadworker, and quillworker] and encourages Boyd to make direct sales herself so that she can keep all the money earned, rather than Abbot arranging their sale in Washington D.C. and risking having the profits stolen by an intermediary.
