Finance Office
Scope and Contents
The American Province of the Poor Handmaids has always had a financial officer, at various times called the Procurator, Financial Coordinator, Finance Commissioner, Director of Finance or Treasurer. For the early period of its history, however, many of the business transactions were handled by the Provincial with her Vicaress. Since at least the restructuring of 1971-1973 the role of the financial officer has been more clearly defined. From 1973-1976 the Commissioner of the Finance Commission served as a member of the Provinicial Council. In 1976 it was decided that Treasurer / Finance Commissioner would be a non-voting member of the Provincial Council appointed by the Provincial Team. Generally, the financial officer of the Province has also served as Treasurer of the Corporation.
Following is a list of Procurators / Finance Commissioners / Treasurers (for the early period only an incomplete list can be gleaned from the community Chronicle; for the period between the post- Vatican II Provincial Chapters of 1966 and 1972 there is fluctuation in the titles):
(Procurators)
Sr. M. Facunda: 1868-? (became 2nd Assistant Provincial in 1870)
Sr. M. Lucia: 3/30/1878-9/2/1878 (died in office)
Sr. M. Radegundis: 1878-? (became 1st Assistant Provincial in 1885, died 1889)
Sr. M. Bertha Brommel: ?1912-1949 (is Treasurer when Corporate records begin)
Sr. M. Symphoria Miller: 1949-1961
(Mother M. Eudoxia Healy, 1st Assistant Provincial, served as Treasurer, 1949-1955)
Sr. M. Hermanda Miller: 1961-1970?
Sr. M. Symphoria Miller: 1970-1971 (is Treasurer when new Articles of Incorporation are adopted in August 1970)
Sr. M. Marien Plotzke: 1971-1973 (named "Financial Coordinator" in May 1971 after Sr. Symphoria resigns from the Provincial Council)
(Finance Commissioners)
Sr. M. Marien Plotzke: 1973-1981
Sr. M. Margery Krebs: 1981-1984
Sr. Mary Joseph Shingler: 1984-1988
(Treasurer)
Sr. Mary Joseph Shingler: 1988-1994
Sr. M. Jolise May: 1994-1997
Since for the earlier period it was not generally possible to separate the Procurator / Treasurer records from Provincial records, a decision was made to put the financial files from all periods with the Financial Office records unless a clear distinction could be made.
